It seems like over the last couple of years the subject of collagen has really exploded. you can find it in the grocery store, vitamin shop, at the beauty counter…just everywhere. It’s coming in all forms imaginable—powders, pills, liquids, creams, and even gummies—all claiming to bring back that youthful glow to our skin and the resilience to our muscles and joints.

now having a background in esthetics and athletic medicine, I know that collagen is the matrix that is a major part of the make up of all of the tissues in our bodies, from our skin, nails, and hair, to our muscles, tendons, ligaments, and even bones. when we’re young, collagen is plentiful and that’s part of why our skin is smooth and joints don’t ache. but as we age the levels of collagen in our bodies decrease causing those pesky crows feet to creep up and knees to get sore. so with all of these supplements being advertised I decided to give it a try and see if the hype is real.

I started out with a pill form because my worst fear about drinking powdered anything is that it’s going to have a questionable flavor that no amount of milk and honey can cover up. each serving said to have six grams of collagen. I took it everyday before my morning workout for about 2 months and honestly, over those couple months I was a bit disappointed because I didn’t notice much of difference in anything. my skin wasn’t softer or clearer, my hair was just as frizzy, my nails were breaking just as much, and my muscles were just as sore from my workouts as they ever had been. I was about to throw in the towel but, that little voice in my head told me not to write it off just yet; to give the powdered collagen a try. so I swallowed my fear of bad flavor and bought the unflavored Vital Proteins collagen peptides. now this one said it has 20 grams of collagen per serving!

again, following the same routine, I drank it every morning with my hot lemon water before working out. after about a month of taking it I was shocked. the first thing that I noticed was that I wasn’t getting nearly as sore as I was, so from that alone I was sold and knew that I was going to keep drinking it. but as time continued to pass I started to notice that my skin was more hydrated, my nails were growing faster and were stronger, and—something I wasn’t expecting—it was helping my digestion. and the icing on the cake is that it doesn’t taste bad!😊

I'm really happy I didn't give up on it, am super excited with the results I've gotten so far and am looking forward to seeing how this affects my skin and body long term.💕
